Steel Zero
News
William Hare Ltd recently submitted our annual SteelZero data, reflecting our long-term commitment to procuring 50% of our steel in line with the initiative’s interim criteria by 2030, and achieving 100% Net Zero steel procurement by 2050.
As founding participants of SteelZero, we continue to collaborate closely with its working groups to help shape our Scope 3 reduction strategies, which are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our latest data shows an evolving supply chain, and we remain confident that we are on track to meet both our 2030 interim targets and our 2050 Net Zero ambitions.
During this transition phase, we are seeing several key trends emerging. Industry continues to favour the specification of rolled members with high recycled content from EAF suppliers, and we are seeing further uptake in steel produced through EAF routes powered by renewable energy.
Our annual figures also confirm that UK BOF producers remain a valued part of our supply chain ensuring that we promote to a dual decarbonisation approach. Supporting them as they transition to lower‑carbon products continues to be an important factor in maintaining a resilient and balanced domestic steel sector.
This year, we also recorded our highest volume of steel originating from circular‑economy reuse routes, signalling strong progress in material circularity. Although not yet reflected in this year’s results, feedback from our broader supply chain members indicates that more lower‑carbon products are expected to become available in the coming years.
Looking ahead, our focus remains on practical and pragmatic action. This includes driving innovation, encouraging minimum‑weight design and supporting a just transition through a dual EAF/BOF decarbonisation strategy.
By working closely with our supply chain and activating as many low‑carbon levers as possible, we are helping deliver positive outcomes across individual projects and the wider steel industry.
