William Hare
At the end of March, William Hare UK hosted two open evenings one at Brandlesholme House and the second at the Scarborough Facility.

The evening at Brandlesholme was aimed at both university graduates and potential apprentices; those students due to leave school or college in September. This event was designed to provide an overview of what William Hare Group does, inform potential candidates of the various roles available at William Hare and demonstrate what life is like working at the Company. There were presentations from heads of departments and students had the opportunity to meet some of our existing apprentices and graduates. The event was incredibly successful, even more so than last year, with 94 people coming through the door and many candidates expressing their interest in the apprenticeship and graduate schemes on offer.

The event at Scarborough was aimed solely at potential apprentices, and was equally successful in showcasing the opportunities available at William Hare UK. It followed a similar structure to the Brandlesholme evening, with the addition of tours around the facility so that students could get a feel for what structural steel fabrication is like.

William Hare UK - Peter Moore
Peter Moore Tribute
William Hare
William Hare
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of our colleague, Peter Moore. Peter had been working on the 4 Kingdom Street project as Site Supervisor, and was valued and respected by colleagues and clients alike for his vast experience and highly approachable manner.

Peter retired after completion of the Olympic Roof Transformation project and after a few months sitting at home, called to ask if he could have his old job back. Ever the comedian, he explained that he was spending too much time with the Mrs and she was giving him too many jobs to do.  Peter, a lifelong Arsenal fan, was taken back with no hesitation and returned to William Hare UK to work on the 4 Kingdom Street Project in October 2015.

Peter’s experience and knowledge of the industry lead to the smooth running of a challenging project, working adjacent to a major road at Paddington, London. The positive approach he brought to work each day made him very popular with his colleagues across the site. Peter even earnt himself the nickname; ‘The Wizard’ because of the wonders that he worked. Peter’s colleagues described him as accurate, diligent and trustworthy as well as being the quickest with a joke and funniest member of the team.

At Peter’s funeral, there were well over 100 people who couldn’t fit into the crematorium and listened to the service from outside. Peter will be greatly missed by his colleagues at William Hare who stated that working with him was an honour and a privilege.

William Hare UK - 10 Fenchurch Avenue
Major Milestone for 10 Fenchurch Avenue
William Hare
William Hare
Monday 21st November brought a major milestone for William Hare UK’s 10 Fenchurch Avenue project. A night time road closure was organised on Fenchurch Street for the installation of the 28 tonne and 19 tonne transfer beams. The installation was undertaken successfully with a 250 tonne mobile crane.

Richard Mosek, William Hare UK Project Manager, stated that “this was particularly tricky as we only had an 8 hour window from the start of the road closure at 9pm until the road had to be re-opened at 5am. Within this time frame we had to lay the crane mats, rig the crane, erect both heavy plate girders and the 4 tying in members and then de-rig the crane.”

Not only did the erectors have to work efficiently within this small time frame, but they also had to battle the elements, with Storm Angus raging over London and most of the UK that night.

Richard further stated that “I’m pleased to report that the whole operation went as smooth as we could have possibly hoped for; the crane arrived on time, both beams arrived on time, the fabrication/painting was faultless, the erection was carried out in a safe and efficient manner with the road being re-opened prior to 5am.

I would therefore like to thank everyone involved in the whole process right through from the design/detailing to the erectors on site.”

10 Fenchurch Avenue is scheduled to be complete by Autumn 2017.

William Hare UAE - Breast Cancer Awareness
Pink Power
William Hare
William Hare
This October was Breast Cancer Awareness month. Ladies from William Hare UAE and Emdad participated in the breast cancer campaign and screening programmes conducted by Lifeline Hospital, Abu Dhabi.

The campaign was held in the Emdad conference room and aimed to educate women on the importance of regular screening to detect and treat breast cancer at the earliest possible stage.

Typically breast cancer is detected either during a screening examination before symptoms develop or after noticing symptoms. Dr. Poppy Hazarika, of the Lifeline Hospital Medical Centre encourages women to conduct quarterly self-examinations, or to seek a clinical examination once a year to ensure regular monitoring. Dr. Hazarika also emphasises the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a preventative measure.

Breast cancer is prevalent throughout the world and it is widely contended that the earlier it is detected, the higher the chance of survival. Therefore, the importance in raising awareness through campaigns such as this one cannot be stressed enough as it really could save lives. Well done to all at William Hare UAE and Emdad for taking part.

William Hare Group - London Wall Place Walkway
Why Did the Steel Cross the Road…
William Hare
William Hare
During the UK’s bank holiday weekend, the 26th to the 30th of August, London Wall road in the City of London was closed to public access to allow William Hare UK to install the walkway that spans the road.

The walkway, which was fabricated in 2 halves by William Hare UAE in Abu Dhabi, spanned the whole road connecting the new London Wall Place development to neighbouring building City Place House.

Carl Pittman, Regional Production Manager at William Hare UAE, stated that “it was a difficult fabrication which required a trial assembly to a very tight deadline.” He praised the efforts of all departments in the UAE to complete the job.

Due to the existence of an underground car park beneath London Wall road and high loads involved, a detailed programme of installation with all permutations of plant locations was developed several months in advance to allow design checks and temporary propping scheme to be developed in order to obtain permission by City of London.

Two weeks prior to bank holiday, a road closure of London Wall was set up for installation of the highly polished stainless steel supporting pylon. The 2 halves of the bridge were also offloaded onto the road, allowing welding of the two halves into one 60Te unit.

During the installation, William Hare UK erection teams worked around the clock to ensure that the bridge was up and running before the road opened on Tuesday morning, using; 2 Self Propelled Modular Trailers, a 500Te and a 100Te mobile crane.

The project was evidence of the great collaborative team approach made by all William Hare Group departments working across the globe to complete this unusual and challenging project.

William Hare UK's New Apprentices
Freshers Week Comes to William Hare UK
William Hare
William Hare
This month marked the beginning of 15 new apprentices’ careers with William Hare UK. The new starters will be based across several William Hare UK locations and working in a variation of technical, craft and maintenance roles.

The apprentices took part in a 4-day induction with William Hare UK Learning and Development Manager, Ceri Travers. The induction was designed to introduce the new starters to the various aspects of the Business and give them a real insight into how it operates.

Day 1 started with an induction at Brandlesholme House, with an overview of the Group given by HR along with talks from the Engineering, Production, Construction and Commercial departments. The apprentices were then taken to the nearby Bury Facility where they were given a tour and an introduction to steel fabrication processes.

Day 2 consisted of a trip to the Wetherby Facility, headquarters of CellbeamUK and where FABSEC licensed cellular beams are produced. A tour was followed by a talk from Facility General Manager Paul Hotchkiss. In the afternoon the apprentices travelled further north through Yorkshire to the Scarborough Facility.

On day 3 the apprentices visited British Steel (formally Tata Steel) in Middlesbrough where they got to experience and see first-hand the progression of raw materials being manufactured into steel products. After this the apprentices travelled to Grantham to visit the William Hare UK paint/coatings Facility, where they learnt how the finished steel product is produced and made ready to deliver to site.

Despite Manchester often being referred to as the UK’s rainiest city (it’s actually only the 8th according to the Independent online), day 4 had an unusually sunny outlook for the apprentices last day of the induction; a trip to Salford and Manchester. The morning started with a visit to two of William Hare’s most well-known completed projects, Media City at Salford Quays and Old Trafford Cricket Ground which exemplifies some of the amazing developments that William Hare Group have been involved in over the years.

Apprentices then visited No.1 Spinningfields, completing the induction perfectly as they experienced a live site, where all the varied components of the Business come together.

The week came to an end in a comedic fashion as Ceri and the apprentices had to run out of the Italian restaurant where they were having lunch with their desserts in hand as the coach was about to leave without them!

Overall the induction was labelled as a success with all apprentices stating that it was very interesting and useful to experience the different aspects of William Hare’s operations and gain a real understanding of where their role will fit into this.

Ceri Travers stated that “the induction would not have been such a success if not for all the different departments working together to make it happen. It was a great William Hare UK team effort.”

Steel Production by British Steel
William Hare and British Steel Form New Partnership
William Hare
William Hare
UK steel will be used in some of London’s most prestigious new buildings after William Hare Group has agreed a new partnership with British Steel.

Past projects that have helped shape the capital’s skyline include the ‘Walkie-Talkie’ and the Olympic Stadium roof transformation. Now ongoing developments – including The Scalpel at 52 Lime Street and the 40-storey skyscraper at 100 Bishopsgate – will both include steel manufactured by British Steel.

David Hodgkiss OBE, William Hare Group’s CEO, said: “We are delighted to have agreed our contract with British Steel, ensuring we continue to supply market-leading products to our customers.

“The construction market is a very demanding one and William Hare, and in turn our clients, demand all the materials we use meet the highest specifications.

“It is also pleasing that we can support UK manufacturing but we are not using British Steel sections in major projects for sentimental reasons. We are doing so because of the quality of the steel they manufacture and the delivery service they provide.”

British Steel was launched on June 1 after it was purchased from Tata Steel by the family investment office Greybull Capital.

And British Steel’s Commercial Director, Peter Hogg, said: “We’re all proud that William Hare selected British Steel to form this type of partnership, it is a great show of confidence in our employees and their capability.

“William Hare has a global reputation for excellence, the evidence of which can be seen in the skylines of cities throughout the world.”

The steel is made at British Steel’s Scunthorpe site and the biggest sections are rolled at its Teesside Beam Mill.

100 Bishopsgate is a 40-storey office tower being developed by Brookfield and constructed by Multiplex in the heart of the city of London. The impressive development will transition from a parallelogram at its base to a rectangle at its top. British Steel is supplying WH UK with 3,500 tonnes of steel for this project.

The Scalpel is a 36-storey office building located on Lime Street in London. British Steel is supplying WH UK with 1,000 tonnes of steel for this project.

William Hare project SMF 1000 Days Accident Free
1,000 Days Accident Free
William Hare
William Hare
The Silo Maintenance Facility project at a Northern Nuclear Facility has recently achieved over 1,000 days accident free. This is equivalent to 1.5 million man hours. William Hare UK and all sub-contractors had a major contribution to this outstanding health and safety achievement.

William Hare started the main frame erection works in May 2015 utilising a 120t Crawler crane. To ensure stability of the structure a complex system of kentledge wires and blocks was designed and assembled on site. The main frame is 120m long, the width including the vent block building is 40m and height is 24m. Further mobile cranes of 40t, 55t and 120t capacities were used providing lifting of structural sections, kal-zip roof sections rolled on site and crane rails. Access to height was gained by a range of MEWPS ranging from 40ft to 120ft.

Those leading the project put the exceptional level of safety down to their ‘zero harm’ system and traffic management plan, which encourages workers to record any issues or near misses and exercise extra vigilance when moving around.

The Silo Maintenance Facility once commissioned, will provide provision for nuclear decommissioning. SMF will support the retrieval of historical nuclear waste from the site’s legacy plants, Magnox Swarf Storage Silos (MSSS) and Pile Fuel Cladding Silo. In particular, it will help the MSSS Silo Emptying Plant retrieval machines by facilitating tool changes and loading new equipment prior to deployment on the plant.

Structural Steel Design Award 2016 Win
William Hare
William Hare
William Hare are pleased to announce that the London Olympic Roof Transformation project has won a Structural Steel Design Award (SSDA) 2016. The Structural Steel Design Awards is a long established award dating back to 1969, designed to celebrate and promote the excellence of steel construction within the United Kingdom.

The awards, organised by the British Steel Constructional Steelwork Association Ltd (BCSA) recognise projects that demonstrate efficiency, aesthetics, sustainability and innovation.

Each year, the SSDA receives many high quality submissions, and only 5 were selected to win an award in 2016. As a minimum requirement, projects are expected to be both excellent in their architectural design and in engineering terms, as well as being cost effective. So it is a privilege that William Hare’s steel fabrication, structural engineering and superior project management has been acknowledged by the prestigious award.

The judges’ commented that “The need to modify the roof and seating of the 2012 Olympic athletics stadium to accommodate a multi-purpose sports venue posed formidable challenges. The geometry and behaviour of the original structure were very complex but, with extremely detailed study and fine engineering skill, most of the original elements have been re-incorporated. The challenges have been met superbly and the project is a triumph for the team and for structural steelwork.”

As well as the successful award win, William Hare also received a Merit for their work on the Leeds Station Southern Entrance project.

William Hare
William Hare UK signed up to a Carbon Emissions Management and Reduction Scheme (CEMARS) managed by Achilles, which is an ISO14064-1 internationally recognised standard. The auditors who visit annually have recently been back at the beginning of July for two days.

William Hare UK agreed to the commitment of a 2.5% year on year reduction (this is an absolute reduction, not turnover or production based) resulting in 12.5% over five years.

The Company has gone above and beyond this target in achieving an outstanding 20.75% over the five years. This means a 20.75% reduction in energy use across the board including electricity, gas, fuel in vehicles and haulage. This is also particularly commendable when considering the inclusion of the new Wigan Facility in 2014 which will have added to the carbon footprint.

In recognition of this achievement CEMARS are recommending William Hare UK for a new standard of “Gold”, which is not yet released, however expected later this year.

UK TEKLA Award Winners - William Hare
UK Tekla Award Winner 2016
William Hare
William Hare
Fantastic news this month as William Hare has won the Sports and Recreation Projects category at Trimble’s UK Tekla BIM Awards 2016, and will now be entered into the Tekla Global BIM Awards.

The Tekla Awards focuses on projects which have utilised Trimble’s Tekla software as part of the process for designing and modelling structures, or where the use of Tekla software has aided collaboration.

William Hare impressed the technical panel with the entry for the London Olympic Roof Transformation Project. Innovative design and engineering have helped to transform the former Olympic Stadium into a world-class permanent, multi-use venue for the future.

“This is an impressive model with lots of complexity. It shows good use of the model coordinates and robotic total stations on site for setting out the lighting paddle brackets.” Stated the panel.

William Hare Quality Improvement Manager, Darren Burnham said: “Tekla has been a core tool for William Hare for the best part of 20 years. This particular project presented many unique challenges; prime among these was the need to coordinate the work with the original structure. The as-built models from the original structure formed the starting point, and Tekla’s 3D model environment was used to ensure that any potential errors were eliminated prior to delivery, both in terms of physical geometry, clash checking and sequencing of the works.”

William Hare - UAE Earth Day
Earth Day
William Hare
William Hare
In line with William Hare’s obligation to be socially responsible for future generations, on the 22nd June 2016 William Hare UAE conducted a workshop to educate the students at Bright Riders School in Abu Dhabi, Mussafah, about the need to be responsible for the environment that they live in.

This workshop had several aims: to enable students to understand the concept of the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle, to gain an understanding of the magnitude of reusable and recyclable material, to provide information about the current practices of waste recycling, and ultimately; how students can adopt this approach themselves.

During the workshop the students were given the task of describing ways to conserve and protect resources by reusing, reducing and recycling, and further express themselves through the medium of drawings or paintings. A drawing competition was then devised to check the participants’ knowledge of the 3 R’s, to motivate them to study and apply the methods learned and to create a deeper interest via art.

The participants were made up of students from classes 5 to 8, who were then divided into four categories. The drawing technique was left to the participants’ choice, with A3 sheets provided by William Hare UAE. Each category had 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes and 6 consolation prizes; with the top prize being a fantastic AED200.

The team got off to a great start, taking the fastest time in their first race – 0.47.49, an incredible 9 seconds faster than the previous year’s best. The time was the fastest of any team for the majority of the day and was only just beaten in the penultimate race before the final.

Going into the final, the Iron Oars were in a strong position but unfortunately couldn’t manage a podium finish and came home in 4th place.

As a consolation prize however, the winners took an early bath after their over excited celebration caused them to capsize after crossing the finish line.

The event was in aid of the two William Hare UK charities of the year, MedEquip4Kids and Cancer Research UK in memory of Jim Hall, the event raised £1,175.00. Thank you to everyone who took part and raised sponsorship. The North East section of William Hare UK will compete in their local boat race later this summer.

William Hare
Earlier this month, William Hare held a Go Karting event at Daytona Racetrack Manchester. The event, a 90 minute endurance ‘Le Mans’ Style race, saw 8 teams from across William Hare UK’s North West offices and facilities battle it out for the top spot.

The race for a podium finish was very tight, with only 1 lap between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th places. One small mistake and it could have been a very different looking podium.

However there was no doubt that Team Mercedes AMG were going to win. Even with an extra driver (meaning more changes) and being sinbinned for 20 seconds, they still completed 143 laps, 3 more than 2nd place who could only manage 140.

Team Mercedes AMG were also made up of last year’s winners as well. They are the team to beat in future!

William Hare - Jim Hall Tribute
Jim Hall Tribute
William Hare
William Hare
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of former William Hare employee, Jim Hall. Jim had been associated with William Hare for over 67 years, and during his tenure progressed from engineering apprentice to senior designer.

In those early days Jim played a vital part in the company’s development. With his natural outgoing personality and technical background, he was the link with our two most valuable clients, British Gypsum and Albright & Wilson. The relationship William Hare had with those companies, supported by Jim, very much created the foundation for William Hare to become a dominant force in the rebuilding of the UK industry in post war years and later.

Jim was a committed sports enthusiast, a keen cyclist, golfer and long distance walker. His other great passions in life were his family and supporting numerous local charities. Despite this, he remained involved with William Hare assisting in the continued expansion of William Hare UK’s facilities and the liaising with retired employees, keeping them informed of developments in the business and organising social and sporting functions.

Jim’s sporting prowess encompassed time trialling records with Lancashire Road Club, several 100 mile challenge walks and a back to back Lands End to John o’Groats journey, cycling one way then walking back.

In recognition of his efforts Jim was given the opportunity to light the Commonwealth Games Flame at the start of its journey around the UK and he carried the baton through Bolton.

His charitable contributions were immense; he was a patron of Bolton Lads & Girls Club, chairman of the Turton fundraising committee of Cancer Research UK and supported Med Equip 4 Kids.

Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew him both in the business and through his many associations in the sporting and charity areas.

In respect of this sad passing, this year’s William Hare UK charity of the year will be the ‘Jim Hall Memorial’ year. All charity events will fundraise in memory of Jim and the money raised will be donated to two charities that were close to Jim’s heart; Cancer Research UK and MedEquip4Kids.

The William Hare Group are pleased to announce that the company has been certified to BIM level 2, ahead of the UK Government’s 2016 deadline for BIM implementation.

William Hare successfully completed the external audit to confirm that the company satisfies the requirements of BIM Level 2 to PAS 1192-2:2013. The company is the first steelwork contractor, and the first Tier 2 contractor in the supply chain, to gain certification.

David Hodgkiss OBE; WHG’s C.E.O. said; “We are committed to being a world leader in the use of BIM and using this approach to the maximum possible extent to ensure optimum project delivery for our clients.”

The certification comes in a long line of industry firsts for WHG, who were the first Steelwork Contractor to achieve CE Marking for both factory and site operations in the UK, the first to achieve CEMARS certification, ESOS certification and the only Steelwork Contractor to currently hold the BES6001 certification to the level of ‘Very Good’. The Group’s UAE fabrication facility is also believed to be the first to achieve CE Marking in the region.

David Lowry, Business Development Manager at Ocean Certification, commented: “William Hare is the first manufacturing organisation that has gained certification with us, so from our point of view they are definitely ahead of the game.”

The auditor, David Robinson from Ocean Certification Limited, has commented that “The staff interviewed showed an understanding of BIM in practice – it was clear that there was strong commitment to the principles of digital design and compliance with client information requirements”.

Using BIM, WHG are able to economically deliver schemes using lean fabrication and erection processes to achieve shorter lead times and the highest quality standards. As a Group we are committed to the use of BIM throughout all aspects of business operations and the supply chain.

William Hare - Leeds Station
Leeds Station wins Tekla Award
William Hare
William Hare
Congratulations to the William Hare UK team who worked on the Leeds Station Southern Entrance project. The project recently won the UK Tekla Award 2015 Steel Category.

The modelling of the structure was very complex geometry, and close coordination with the architect and the engineer was essential as achieving the correct set-out of the steel was imperative. A point cloud survey was also used to establish the constraints of the existing site and included the arches, platforms, rail track and existing steel. By doing this, good clear insight was obtained as to what challenges would need to be addressed during the construction phase of the project.

One of the most challenging parts of the project was its location, being centred over the River Aire and locked on all sides by stations and existing structures. Every steel member needed to be barged into the site from the marshalling point on Water Lane. Some of the steel frame was located under the existing brick arches and inventive ways of both delivering and erecting the steel in to its final location were needed. In conjunction with Network Rail possession works for the steel elements that are over the track, made planning and logistics key to the project. The use of the model made this task easier and improved the intelligence available at an early stage of the construction scheme’s development. The judges’ comments on the project were; “A nice looking but complex model. The clever workflow to manoeuvre in complex spaces is impressive.”

Peter Ryder and Christopher Grime went to collect the award on behalf of the company (pictured right with Tekla UK Managing Director Andrew Bellerby). A special mention also goes to Kyle Carter, Sue Wadsworth, Steve Bleasby, Josh Emerson and the JLM team who were instrumental in the success of the project.

Milton Court Receives SSDA Commendation
William Hare
William Hare
Milton Court is a new £89m facility built for the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Located near the Barbican, it occupies two basement levels and the first six floors of the development. It includes a world-class 609-seat concert hall, two theatres, rehearsal rooms, office space, a TV studio suite and bar, as well as an impressive roof garden.

The concert hall and studio theatre were designed to meet very high acoustic performance requirements utilising a ‘box- in-box’ principle. Due to the small footprint of the site, a steel ‘box-in-box’ system gave the benefit of acoustically isolating each internal part of the building from one another.

Acoustic isolation was achieved by adopting an internal steel frame encased in concrete with walls constructed out of dense block-work. The project was entered into the Structural Steel Design Awards which is organised by the BCSA and Tata Steel earlier in the year. The project was then awarded a commendation last month.

Judges’ comment – “A highly complex project on a dense urban site, with severe acoustic demands due to traffic noise and underground trains, and isolation between separate performance spaces. The solution is ‘box-in-box’ construction, whereby each performance space is constructed of steelwork built within, and isolated from, the concrete substructure. Steelwork is key to this world-class music and drama facility”.

William Hare UK kindly donated several steel columns, parapet channels and technical advice to Bury Bolton Street station for their canopy project. The station dates back to 1846 when it was opened by the East Lancashire Railway (ELR) as Bury Railway Station.

The canopy was then later renovated and with the help of William Hare was finally erected above the platform. The canopy is now awaiting its new roof which will complete the project before summer 2015.

William Hare Group is pleased to announce that on Thursday 4th December 2014, we strengthened our structural steel-work capacity in the North West of England by the acquisition of the assets and workforce of Eiffel Steelworks Ltd.

Hat-trick of Safety Awards
William Hare
William Hare
William Hare has won its third major award for its Health and Safety in a matter of a few weeks. This latest award comes from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) who have awarded William Hare with its Gold Award for Occupational Health and Safety.

The award follows the announcement of an International Safety Award from The British Safety Council and an ECIA Safe Working Award, both of which were announced earlier in March.

The RoSPA Safety Awards are internationally recognised and have fast become the most sought after accolade by organisations from every sector. The awards are judged on three main criteria:

  • Measure of occupational health and safety management ‘input’ such as the level of development of systems and culture

William Hare
William Hare
William Hare has been announced by Engineering Construction Industry Association (ECIA) as a winner of its “Safe Working Award” for 2013.The award is in recognition of William Hare’s achievements in maintaining low accident rates throughout 2013.

This is the second award William Hare has achieved for its safety record during 2013, coming close on the heels of the announcement of an International Safety Award from The British Safety Council.

Working within the framework of the Health and Safety Executive’s RIDDOR regulations, William Hare achieved an Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) throughout 2013 which was well below the industry average.

In presenting the award, Richard Ash the Safety Health and Environment Manager of the ECIA noted “Such performance does not come about by chance.”

“There is no doubt that our members deliver a performance that is substantially better than that for construction as a whole. Broadly speaking ECIA rates are nearly three times better than those for construction more generally. Staff Complete Fundraising for Air Ambulance
Fundraising For Air Ambulance
William Hare
William Hare
After a year of fundraising activities the staff of William Hare have raised a total of £4,000 for two Air Ambulance charities.

The funds, which will be matched by a donation from William Hare itself, have been split equally between North West Air Ambulance which operates out of Manchester City Airport and Heliport, and the Great North Air Ambulance which flies from Durham and Cumbria.

The Air Ambulance was chosen as William Hare’s Charity of the Year for 2013 following a poll of the staff. Human Resources Manager, Judith Watts, explains more, “The Air Ambulance was suggested by several of our employees as our potential charity of the year. When we looked into it we were impressed not only by the valuable work that it does, but the fact that it totally reliant on donations to fund its operations. We were keen to lend our support.”

Funds were raised through a variety of events including a Christmas raffle and a Roses Cricket Challenge, in which the staff from WHL’s Scarborough Works emerged victorious over its counterparts from Bury. Arguably the highlight of the events came in September when 21 members of staff successfully completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge – a real test of endurance involving climbing Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough – in under 12 hours.

Gemma Torkington from North West Air Ambulance Charity said, “We are extremely grateful to all at William Hare Group who have supported us. As a charity, we are wholly reliant on donations such as this to ensure our helicopters can continue to operate our life-saving service.”

The arts stars of tomorrow have been given a major boost with the opening of the Guildhall School and Drama at Milton Court in London.

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is one of the world’s leading conservatoires and drama schools, offering musicians, actors, stage managers and theatre technicians an inspiring environment in which to develop as artists and professionals.

Located near the Barbican the new facility was built at a cost of £89 million and provides world class performance and teaching facilities which include:

  • a 608-seat Concert Hall
  • a 223-seat Theatre
  • a Studio Theatre
  • three major rehearsal rooms
  • TV studio suite

William Hare provided the structural steel for the project which featured a complex box within a box construction providing full acoustic separation for the performance spaces. In essence the inner box steel is floating on acoustic bearings insulating each hall from noise interference, both from the outside world and the adjacent halls.

Other steel elements were pre-encased in concrete to provide a high quality exposed concrete soffit to the concert hall. William Hare was also responsible for supplying the precast concrete planks throughout the project.

Emal Phase 2 Achieves First Production
EMAL Phase 2 Acheives First Production
William Hare
William Hare
A full three months ahead of schedule Emirates Aluminum (Emal) has achieved the First Hot Metal (FHM) production from the Phase II expansion of its Al Taweelah factory in Abu Dhabi.

The new $6 billion Pot Line is the largest in the world and will increase production capacity at the site from 750,000 tonnes per year to 1.3 million metric tonnes. The expansion of the plant will create an additional 1000 jobs.

William Hare provided over 18,000 tonnes of steel to the project, and the safe, early delivery of the frame was a contributory factor to Emal being able to bring the plant on line ahead of schedule. William Hare’s contribution to the project was completed with an excellent safety record, without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI) being reported.

A statement issued by Emal highlighted the achievements of the project overall.  “Faster, safer and better, the construction of Phase II has exceeded the already exemplary standards achieved in the construction of its Phase I, setting new global industry records in the process. Taking just two years, it is also the fastest that any aluminium smelter has reached FHM.”

Team Raise Money for Macmillan Cancer Support - William Hare News
Raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support
William Hare
William Hare
A team of 11 workmates from William Hare’s Scarborough workshops have completed the challenging Lyke Wake Walk, raising funds for MacMillan Cancer Support in the process.

The 40 mile trek stretches across the barren North Yorkshire Moors from inland Osmotherly in the west to Ravenscar on the east coast. The route includes also 1,500m of climbing (equivalent to the climbing Ben Nevis).

The challenge for the walk, first instituted in 1955 by Bill Cowley, states that the walk should be completed within a 24 hour period. The team actually completed the walk in a very creditable 17 hours, despite some very challenging weather conditions during the overnight portion of the walk.

The walk was instigated by Paul Slade, who sadly lost his brother Mark to cancer in 2012. Paul had been impressed by the care and compassion shown by the MacMillan nurses during this difficult period, and so galvanized some of his work colleagues to help raise some money in support of the trust.

In total the walk raised £2,500, with the cheque being presented to MacMillan by Paul himself.

Air W1 Wins Structural Steel Design Award
William Hare
William Hare
The Air W1 project has been announced as a winner in the 2013 Structural Steel Design Awards jointly organised by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) and Tata Steel.

The steelwork to this major refurb project in the heart of London’s West End was completed by William Hare in 2010. The project posed the challenge of providing a state of the art building behind an existing Grade II Listed Façade dating back to 1915. The judges for the competition, which included representatives from the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and RIBA, noted that the project was an“exemplar for imaginative incorporation of existing steelwork in a striking modern office / retail / residential development”.

Now in their 45th year, the Structural Steel Design Awards celebrate the excellence of the United Kingdom in the field of steel construction, showcasing the uses of steel construction in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics, sustainability and innovation.

The Air W1 development provides 30,000 sq m of Grade A office space and incorporates the restoration of Art Deco details from the original building, combined with high-specification modern features including a stunning central atrium. Located just off Regent Street, the overall construction programme for the mixed use scheme was completed four months early and under budget, with the successful erection of the 4,500 tonne steel frame playing a key part in the successful delivery of the project as a whole

Steel Beam Erected 20 Fenchurch st - William Hare News
Final steel beam is erected 20 Fenchurch Street
William Hare
William Hare
The construction of London’s latest landmark, 20 Fenchurch Street, has reached a major milestone with the erection by William Hare of the last of more than 6,000 separate steel sections within the main steel frame. The milestone comes just eight months after the first column was erected in April this year.

The installation completes the tower’s main superstructure and is a significant moment in the construction of the development, which is set to bring much needed new office space to a supply-constrained London market when it completes in just over 12 months.

20 Fenchurch Street is one of London’s most eagerly anticipated development projects thanks to celebrated architect Rafael Viñoly’s innovative design. The 160m high building flares outwards from its base so that the larger floorplates are to be found at the higher storeys, delivering both impressive architecture and more efficient office space than many of its neighbours. When complete, 20 Fenchurch Street will contain over 28,000m3 of concrete, 13,000 tonnes of structural and reinforcing steel and approximately 33,000m2 of glass – an area equivalent to more than 4.5 football pitches.

CEMARS - Carbon Reduction Programme
William Hare Accredited under CEMARS
William Hare
William Hare
William Hare Group Limited has been awarded certification to the world class, ISO accredited CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme) standard by the Achilles Carbon Reduction programme. Certification to CEMARS demonstrates William Hare’s commitment to measuring, managing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a robust and credible way.

William Hare has achieved CEMARS for its operational carbon footprint for the year January to December 2010. Aligning to the company’s environmental and sustainability objectives, verification of the company’s operational footprint recognises the actions of William Hare to measure our greenhouse gas emissions understand our carbon liabilities and put in place management plans to reduce emissions across our UK operations.

Commenting on the successful certification process, Brian Hughes, William Hare’s Safety, Health and Environment Director noted:  “CEMARS has given us an effective means to establish and benchmark the metrics for reducing the carbon footprint of the business as a whole. In fact the company had been collating its carbon data over a number of years, however prior to the implementation of CEMARS it had no effective means for independently verifying this.

The accreditation process has given us a broader insight into the underlying principles for successful carbon reduction, and together with support given by CEMARS itself has made the whole process an enjoyable and enriching learning experience from which we will reap many benefits in the long term”.

William Hare recognises that the impacts of climate change through greenhouse gas emissions is a significant issue and in acknowledgement of this, the organisation considers carbon management as an integral part of the company’s management system. Key targets set by William Hare to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the coming years include a target to reduce emissions (relative to turnover) by 2.5%  year on year. Reduction activities will focus on William Hare’s most significant emissions, namely electricity, road freight, natural gas and shipping freight. Promoting an energy-aware culture amongst the company, William Hare is working to balance environmental and financial priorities operation-wide in order to demonstrate regulatory compliance to existing and future legislation.
